Muriel Spark Zine

The Muriel Spark zine was created in my HND Illustration course from a brief from the Glasgow Women’s Library as part of the Muriel Spark 100 programme in 2018.
Muriel Spark is best-known as the author of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, but she was also a poet and literary critique. Muriel Spark was at the top of her profession, internationally, for more than half a century. She was never out of print, went on to win many literary awards and received a number of honorary degrees. She became “Dame Muriel Spark” when she was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire in 1993.
The brief was to create new work influenced or based on Muriel Spark’s work or life and take part in the national centenary programme celebrating this grande dame of Scottish writing by exploring her work and life to create contemporary work that celebrates her.
I had never been to the Women’s Library before then and after visiting and viewing their zine library I became really interested in zines, which is an interest that continues today!
The comic is a brief summary of Muriel Spark’s life from her working during World War 2 and struggling while working on her book The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. I tried to make it have as little text as possible for the challenge to make it make sense to the reader without words.
